Reflections on my social media fast
So, I recently went on a social media fast. I’ve since broken it, but wanted to write down a few reflections on it. First, my book sales weren't any worse than they normally are. I sometimes use social media for business, thinking that it's helping me get new listeners or customers. Well, I think it hasn't made a difference. Maybe I need to pivot and do short-form content. I just hate short-form, though. I'm also trying to consume less of it. I mostly do it pretty well. But still, the idea, the principle of it, is something I don't like.
So I found that in restricting my social media time, I don't think I actually did much more writing. I mean, today I've worked on a few blog posts, but no book material. And maybe that's okay. After a week of working quite a few late nights, maybe a day of taking things easy and not getting much done is actually what I need to refresh myself, remotivate myself, and to indeed get started and get more done.
So maybe it has helped in a way. I guess I've wasted less time on that. My wife says I've started wasting more time on phone games and whatnot. Still addicted to screens, that is probably true. Still, I'm also slightly addicted to productivity. I can't sit still and have to be doing something. I often try to make it something that will benefit me. But sometimes it is a deception.
For example, all the games I was playing on my phone were via Mistplay, an app that will pay you to play games. The problem, though, is you are paid very little. So I spend, or waste, a bunch of time playing games with this false idea that I'm actually being productive (since the games are technically paying me). Maybe this is all a trap.
Or maybe it's a way to make a few bucks doing something you actually enjoy. I'm not sure.
Here is my link though. Give it a try and tell me how you like it.
Well, that was certainly a pivot for an article about using less social media.
I think I am going to resume use of it, probably with a focus on posting content rather than consuming it. I'll try to report back later on this.
