The Frug Life Goals
I wrote this article on goals for the podcast, but really, it is more just a ramble on the current state of affairs. In essence, the only real goal within it was to make $1,000 in a year. I didn’t really expand on exactly how I would accomplish this goal, so I think I will take another attempt at it now.
Original Post
I really want the blog and podcast to make more money. Right now, I have a bunch of equipment I could buy and other improvements I could make, but given that the cash flow of both is next to nothing, I have trouble justifying it.
In the past, the blog made money with display ads, which haven't been paying well lately. The podcast had made some money from affiliates, but historically, host-read ads have paid the most. Specifically, Anchor was the biggest sponsor, but I also had sponsorships from some other ad platforms.
I think the biggest earnings weren't from the show directly, but rather the activity I did because the show pushed me in that direction. To be more specific, I think the Frug Life pushed me to be an early user of SoFi, which led to me becoming an ambassador for them. All the promotions gave me some decent money.
I guess we are most of the way through 2024 already, so it might be too late to make goals (actually, probably just in time for 2025). I want the show to just make $1,000 in a year. Actually, that is a very small amount; I need to shoot higher.
I really need to develop some new income streams for the show, as presently there is nothing really coming in. I think what I'm going to do is sell a new book. Originally, I was dubbing these "The Frug Life" books, but I think that concept is a little too much to deliver on. So, we will see what I can offer instead. I have a draft complete—or at least I did, until I started writing and tweaking more.
Something I have learned, though: editing and improving a written work is so much harder than writing it in the first place. At least, that's what I am thinking right now.
Anyway, what is the big plan at this point? We will see how it goes.
A Better Plan
Goal: Make $1,000 in revenue for the podcast.
The primary source of revenue will be from sales of my upcoming book. The book will be sold for $2.99 on Amazon or be readable via Kindle Unlimited. That means I need to sell 335 books in a year to more or less reach my goal. Actually, since I only get a certain cut from Amazon, I need to sell more books than that—it should be closer to 393 books.
For reference, so far I have sold 16 books in my life. That is actually pretty bad, and 393 books a year seems like a huge number to me.
I’m not sure what breaking my goal into parts like this has really done for me, aside from showing me my plan is going to be a lot of work for not that much return. Maybe it is showing me I need a better idea. Well, I guess I will start with this plan and go from there. I would say I will update you all on the status later, but I haven’t been the best at that lately.
