Reflections on "An Accountant"'
Sometimes I think about the things I've done for this show, and it’s a little hard to believe they really happened. Like, did I truly write a book on cryptocurrency? I can see the book, so I guess I must have, but it seems like a lifetime ago. Right now, while I’m working on several new books, it feels like none of them are close to being finished. But, that isn’t the topic of today’s post.
Today, I wanted to spotlight a specific episode of the show titled, “Choosing a Major and a Career.” In that episode, I sample a bit of Rocky Paterra’s work, “I'm an accountant.” The path that led to that is one that surprises me still, as you can bet Mr. Frug was not super keen on paying anyone so I could sample their work. And there was indeed a payment made to Rocky. So how did this happen?
A Generous Partnership
When I first started the show, I consulted with a few different people who had skills in audio mixing. I knew I couldn’t afford an editor, so I asked for some guidance. They taught me some of the basics of editing, which I still do today. If you ever want to see my process, I stream the recording and editing sessions on twitch or youtube from time to time.
In any case, one of these audio people, Lindsay, helped me out on other projects. It was actually her idea that I should sample the clip on the show. I told her the economics didn’t really make sense given the amount of money the show makes—which is still very little!—and she then generously agreed to foot the bill. Which was so wonderful.
Lunch with Mr. Frug
I think the show is really endearing and fun to a pretty small group of people, mostly those I know in person or have interacted with online. I’m not sure how many people I don’t know who listen, so I’ve been thinking about doing another audience survey. One of the prizes might be "Lunch with Mr. Frug,” which I think would be pretty fun. And actually this is ongoing right now! This idea of mine is happening right now. Here is the link to sign up.
If the winner was local to San Diego, it would be straightforward. If they were in a place I frequent, like Utah or Idaho, that could also work out. But if the person was way out of the way, that could be a problem. Or, perhaps, it would just be another opportunity for a blog post like this! Maybe this would be the story of how Mr. Frug finally went to Europe.
I think the odds of that aren’t too high, though, as most of my listenership is in the U.S., and a majority of them are in California.
